Colocasia esculenta
In Hawaiian culture our older sibling is Hāloanakalaukapaili the kalo plant - Colocasia esculenta. To create this piece I alternated printing hand-carved kalo starch cells with painting my own family photos over and over, weaving my heritage through each image. Being Native and mixed in itself makes me a living tapestry, and so I manipulate melancholy imagery with moments of joy to explore the memories and influences which make us who we are. I invite the viewer into my home, into my memories and my self, as these many parts and memories make a single whole.
